Mixed-Use Senior Housing

Location: Detroit, MI Client: Grandmont Rosedale Development Corporation

On Detroit’s west side, the community non-profit Grandmont Rosedale Development Corporation is working to transform a vacant lot into mixed-use apartments for seniors. A catalyst for future development within this walkable and growing community, the design will include 33 apartments, ground-floor commercial space, and resident community space and garden. The proposed design is sensitive to the prominent views of the building from Grand River and occupies the corner of the lot to help define the urban streetscape and maximize commercial frontage. The facade strategy aims to enhance daylight and views within living spaces with a simple and uniform pattern of window openings, achieving an elegant yet economical design solution. Once complete, the project will provide needed housing for seniors in the community who are looking to simplify their lifestyle, attract new residents to the neighborhood, and promote new business along a major Detroit main street.
